ANCHORAGE – Following their record-breaking team performances
at the 2013 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Championships last
weekend, the Seawolves were honored with more accolades on Monday.
Collecting Div. II Men's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association
(USTFCCCA) National Athlete of the Week Award was junior Micah Chelimo. Chelimo,
from Kapkoi, Kenya, led the men's track & field team to a second-place team
finish in their indoor debut with victories in the mile, 3,000 meters and 5,000
meters. He currently leads
DII in the 5K with a mark of 13:51.19 set at the UW Husky Classic.
Also receiving a weekly accolade was the women's track
& field team as the Great Northwest Athletic Team of the Week. The Seawolves, also competing in their
indoor debut at the league championships, defeated Western Washington,
147-117.5, while ending Seattle Pacific's nine-year run as the tournament
champion.
The Seawolves are inactive
until the NCAA Div. II Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 7-9, where
qualified individuals will compete in Birmingham, Ala. The rest of the
Seawolves will get ready for the outdoor season, which commences on March 8-9
with the Ben Brown Invite.
