UAA wraps up first season of indoors

SEASON RECAP: The Alaska Anchorage men's and women's track & field teams concluded their first season of indoor competition in stellar fashion ... the Seawolves qualified12 student-athletes to the NCAA Championships where they amassed 10 All-America honors and an NCAA Champion in junior Micah Chelimo ... combined, 15 Seawolves received All-West Region honors, while Chelimo and head coach Michael Friess were recognized as the West Region's Male and Coach of the Year, respectively ...  the UAA women's team came away with the team title at the GNAC Championships, while the men's  squad took second ... overall, 15 Seawolves were All-Conference recipients, while the teams registered eight individual and relay titles ... Chelimo and Friess were acknowledged on the GNAC front as well as Karolin Anders, who took home GNAC Female Freshman of the Year honors.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP: The Seawolves concluded their first NCAA indoor appearance with 10 All-America honors in Birmingham, Ala., highlighted by junior Micah Chelimo's national title in the 5,000 meters ... Chelimo also earned All-America honors in the 3,000 meters, finishing fourth ... other All-America awards went to Susan Tanui (3rd, 5K & 8th, 3K), Karolin Anders (pentathlon) and Ruth Keino (2nd, 5K) ... the women's distance medley of Susan Bick, Haleigh Lloyd, Jessica Pahkala and Ivy O'Guinn became UAA's first ever relay team to earn All-America accolades ... overall, the Seawolf women finished 11th with 23 points, while the men were 14th with 15 points ... both UAA squads posted the best finishes among GNAC schools, while the women were second only to national-champion Academy of Art (Calif.) (59 pts) among West Region schools.

SENIOR SEND OFF: The Seawolves said goodbye to two seniors following the conclusion of the indoor season – Alfred Kangogo and Miriam Kipng'eno ... Kangogo, from Eldoret, Kenya, completed his Green & Gold career with four All-America honors; one in cross country and three in track & field – all in the 1500 meters ... Kipng'eno, also from Eldoret, registered three All-America accolades in cross country, while furnishing a combined six All-Region honors.

USTFCCCA DIV. II NATIONAL TEAM RANKING: The men's team earned its first ever indoor ranking on Feb. 5 at No. 22, before advancing to No. 20 on Feb. 12 and falling to No. 25 on Feb. 19 ... the women's team entered the national poll on Feb. 5 at No. 15 and received a regular season-high at No. 12 on Feb. 12 and Feb. 19, before dropping three positions to No. 15 for the final two weeks ... the men's team ended with a NCAA finish of 14th, while the women's squad completed the season at No. 11.

GNAC CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP: The UAA women's team made history by winning the GNAC title in its first year of competition with 147 points, breaking a nine-year run by Seattle Pacific ... the men's team finished runner up to Western Washington with 134 points ... junior Micah Chelimo (one mile, 3K, 5K) was named the Most Outstanding Male Performer with three GNAC titles, while junior Susan Tanui (3K, 5K) came away with two individual crowns ... other Seawolves to pick up titles were freshman Rosie Smith (200m), Cody Thomas (heptathlon) and the men's distance medley relay.

HUSKY CLASSIC/UW OPEN RECAP: The Seawolves' second weekend in Seattle was highlighted by junior Micah Chelimo as the Kapkoi, Kenya, native crushed the GNAC record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:51.19, 21 seconds faster than the previous mark set in 2011 ... Chelimo is one of just two Division II athletes with sub-14 minute times this winter ... in addition to Chelimo's performance that landed him GNAC's Red Lion Men's Track Athlete of the Week on Feb. 11, the Seawolves combined for three NCAA automatic times and nine provisional times ... joining Chelimo with a ticket to the NCAAs are Susan Tanui (16:29.48) and Ruth Keino (16:31.87) in the 5,000 meters ... Tanui and Keino are currently ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in the nation, trailing Shippensburg's Katrina Spratford (16:27.15)

UW INVITE RECAP: The Seawolves commenced their first season of indoor action in style with 10 NCAA provisionally qualifying (PNQ) times/marks (7 men, 3 women) ... on the women's side Susan Tanui (3,000) and Ruth Keino (5,000) each set a PNQ, while the distance medley relay of Ivy O'Guinn, Haleigh Lloyd, Susan Bick and Tanui posted a time of 12:00.01 for a PNQ ... for the men's team, Ethan Hewitt (400), Joe Day (800), Alfred Kangogo (One Mile), Micah Chelimo (3,000), Dylan Anthony (5,000), Cody Thomas (Hept.) and the DMR (Kangogo, Hewitt, Day, Chelimo) all set PNQ's ... the GNAC honored Chelimo, Thomas and Tanui for their performances.
