Lumberjacks fell Seawolves in final minutes

ANCHORAGE – Alaska Anchorage got big games from guards Brian McGill and Travis Thompson but Humboldt State fought off a late charge by the hosts to earn a 87-83 men's basketball victory in the Seawolf Jamboree at the Alaska Airlines Center on Friday night.

The Seawolves (3-6) got 21 points, nine assists and five rebounds from McGill, plus 20 points and a pair of steals from Thompson as they suffered their first Jamboree loss since 2004, snapping a 16-game winning streak in the annual December showcase.

The Lumberjacks (4-4) were led by 21 points and five rebounds from guard Austin Bryan, whose three-pointer with two minutes remaining snapped a 76-76 tie and gave the Lumberjacks the lead for good. Bryan shot 5 of 8 from long range, while point guard Malik Morgan tallied 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 10 assists for the visitors from Arcata, Calif.

UAA trailed 46-43 at halftime and fell behind by its largest margin when HSU came out of the locker room with a 10-0 run. The Seawolves took only five minutes to erase that deficit, however, with Thompson nailing a three-pointer and coming up with a steal and layup to make it 59-59.

The Seawolves could never manage to take the lead, though, and Humboldt's David Howard made it 74-67 on a feed from Morgan with 5:23 remaining. Down 76-70, UAA got back-to-back three-pointers from Thompson and Christian Leckband to forge the sixth and final tie with 2:25 left.

HSU used the ensuing media timeout to draw up a play for Bryan, who got free for a three-pointer from the top of the key at the 2-minute mark. Leckband sliced it to 79-78 with two free throws on UAA's next possession, only to see Morgan convert four straight free throws. Bryan sealed it with two more charities with 19 seconds remaining, putting his team ahead 85-79.

Leckband finished with season-highs of 12 points and seven rebounds, while freshman center Kalidou Diouf had 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Senior center Brad Mears had six points – all in the first half – and two blocks for UAA, which was hosting its first regular-season game against a California Collegiate Athletic Association opponent since 1998.

Both teams shot over 50 percent, with the Lumberjacks holding a slight edge, .524 (33 of 63) to .508 (30 of 58). UAA won the rebounding battle 36-31 but committed 15 turnovers to HSU's 10.

The Lumberjacks complete their trip north with a 5 p.m. game against Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday before UAA closes the Jamboree with a 7 p.m. showdown against 16th-ranked BYU-Hawaii.

NOTES: Thompson became the seventh player in Seawolf history to reach 1,300 career points when he drained a three-pointer to give him seven points at halftime ... Thompson moved into No. 3 on UAA's all-time three-pointers list with 240, passing former record-holder Jim Hajdukovich (238, 1995-99).
