Saints bounce 'Wolves in GNAC quarters

LACEY, Wash. – Senior forward Kylie Burns had 14 points and nine rebounds but the Alaska Anchorage offense could never get rolling Wednesday as the 3rd-seeded Seawolves suffered a 58-48 loss to 6th-seeded Saint Martin's in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference quarterfinals at Marcus Pavilion.

UAA (19-8), ranked No. 5 in the NCAA West Region poll, shot just 26 percent from the floor and was outrebounded 50-43 by the Saints, who beat the Seawolves for the third time this year.

SMU (18-10) got 21 points – including a pair of back-breaking three-pointers in the final two minutes – from guard Angela Gelhar, plus eight points and a tournament-record 17 rebounds from forward Megan Wiedeman. The tournament hosts advance to Friday's early semifinal against 2nd-seeded Western Washington.

UAA appeared comfortable early, taking a 16-9 lead on Burns's mid-range jumper with 11:53 left in the first half. But the Seawolves would go scoreless for the next eight minutes as the Saints went on a 15-0 run to take control.

The Seawolves trailed 33-23 at halftime and kept within striking distance for much of the second half. After trailing by as many as 11 points, UAA got a three-pointer from Jenna Buchanan (9 pts) and Kiki Robertson sank a free throw with 2:30 remaining to slice it to a 50-48 score.

Gelhar provided the clincher on the next possession, however, draining a long-range three-pointer, and repeated the feat moments later for a 56-48 lead with 58 seconds left.

Reserve point guard Christina Davis had seven points for UAA, while junior win g Alli Madison contributed six points and six rebounds. Robertson, who is ranked No. 4 nationally in steals per game, finished with five points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Despite the loss, the Seawolves still have a chance to qualify for the NCAA West Regional Tournament. The announcement of the field will happen online at ncaa.com on Sunday evening.
