Dixie downs UAA, 3-2, in California finale

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Juniors Julia Mackey and Katelynn Zanders combined for 30 kills Saturday but it wasn't enough for the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to avoid a 5-set upset against Dixie State in the GNAC/Pac West Crossover tournament at Van Dyne Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (6-2) got a team-season-high 17 kills from Mackey, while Zanders contributed 13 kills and sophomore middle blocker Kayla McGlathery had eight.

The Red Storm (3-5) were led by 17 kills on .538 hitting from right-side hitter Nicole Koehler as the Utah squad out-hit the Seawolves .228 to .090.

UAA hit over .300 for most of the first set to take the early lead, however the hot streak would not continue, and the Seawolves finished the day with 36 attack errors.

The Seawolves rallied late in the fourth set to send it the distance, scoring the final eight points of that frame to erase a 19-17 deficit. Dixie jumped to a 4-0 lead in the fifth, however, and UAA never got closer than 9-6 the rest of the way.

Senior libero Quinn Barker had 15 digs for the Seawolves, while sophomore setter Morgan Hooe delivered 27 assists, seven digs and three service aces.

Saturday's match marked the end of non-conference play for UAA. Up next is the start of Great Northwest Athletic Conference play as the Seawolves travel to Bellingham, Wash., to face 9th-ranked Western Washington on Tuesday at 6 p.m. ADT.
