#2 Seawolves outslug Saints for 9th straight

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 5) – Junior center Megan Mullings had 19 points and eight rebounds Thursday as the nationally 2nd-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team claimed its ninth straight victory, 69-56 over Saint Martin's at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (21-1, 11-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 13 points, four assists, four steals and no turnovers from senior wing Alli Madison to earn the regular-season sweep of SMU. With second-place Seattle Pacific idle, the victory also pushed UAA's GNAC lead to 2.5 games over the Falcons.

The Saints (7-12, 4-7) were led by 13 points, five rebounds and three steals from starting guard Krista Stabler, while reserve guard Angela Gelhar added 12 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting to keep the visitors from Lacey, Wash., within striking distance into the second half.

UAA held a 27-13 lead late in the first half before an 8-0 Saints run stole the momentum. The Seawolves went up 36-23 when Madison sank a short jumper to start the second half, but SMU came back again, cutting the lead to 39-34 on Gelhar's trey at the 15:46 mark.

After a free throw by Mullings, UAA got a steal from Kiki Robertson, who fed Jessica Madison for the first a three-pointer that sparked a 13-2 surge.

Junior guard Jenna Buchanan, who was shut out for the first 29 minutes, then exploded for 11 points in a 5-minute span to help UAA extend the lead as high as 65-43 with 6:16 remaining.

The Saints ended the game with a 10-2 run over the final 2:25 to make the final score closer.

Mullings, a 6-footer from Glendale, Ariz., scored double figures for the eight straight game by shooting 7 of 14 from the field and 5 of 8 at the charity stripe. She also grabbed six of UAA's 20 offensive rebounds, helping UAA outboard the Saints 45-32.

Sophomore point guard Kiki Robertson also sparked the second-half surge with eight points, eight assists and four steals, while senior forward KeKe Wright finished with eight points (4-4 FT) and eight rebounds. Jessica Madison had eight points and five boards, and redshirt freshman forward Sierra Afoa matched her career high with three steals.

UAA returns to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 5:15 p.m. to face Western Oregon. A victory over the Wolves would make the Seawolves the first team to officially qualify for the 2015 GNAC Tournament, set to take place Mar. 4-7 in Billings, Mont.
