#14 UAA rallies to shock #21 Seasiders, 3-2

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Senior outside hitter Katelynn Zanders pounded 19 kills and made 16 digs Friday to lead a huge comeback for No. 14 Alaska Anchorage as the Seawolves remained unbeaten with a 23-25, 23-25, 25-13, 25-19, 15-3 victory over No. 21 Brigham Young-Hawaii in the GNAC/Pac West Crossover volleyball tournament at Nicholson Pavilion.

The Seawolves (7-0) got double-doubles from three players as senior right-side hitter Julia Mackey finished with 13 kills, 10 digs and five block assists, and freshman outside hitter Leah Swiss had 11 kills and 11 digs. Freshman libero Kyla Militante-Amper added a match-high 18 digs.

The Seasiders (2-5), who fell to 0-3 at the Crossover, got a match-high 20 kills from outside hitter Tonga Sinamoni, but she also committed 17 of her team's 38 attack errors.

UAA connected for just a .169 attack percentage through the first two sets before turning things around in a big way, hitting .400 or better in each of the final three frames. The Seawolves made only four attack errors in sets 3-5, blasting away at a .636 clip (8 kills-1 error-11 attacks) in the fifth.

Zanders, a two-time All-GNAC selection, powered the charge with her team-high third double-double of the year, adding a pair of solo blocks as well.

Meanwhile, Swiss led a parade of six Seawolf attackers who all hit better than .250, connecting at a .476 rate (11-1-21). Junior setter Morgan Hooe had five kills on .500 hitting and dished 44 assists to help the Seawolves hit .317 as a team – their fifth straight match above to .300 plateau.

Junior middle blocker Erin Braun finished with eight kills and a match-high six total blocks, and senior middle blocker Caitlin Hanson had six kills and four block assists. UAA outblocked the Hawaiians 13-2 and won the digs battle, 65-55.

The victory marks UAA's second victory over BYUH in 10 all-time meetings. The other win was also a 5-set match that began with an 0-2 deficit, Sept. 11, 2009 in Laie, Hawaii.

UAA looks to extend the second-best start in program history when it finishes play at the Crossover with a 1:30 p.m. ADT match Saturday against Dixie State.
