#14 Seawolves stay hot, sweep Red Storm

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Senior right-side hitter Julia Mackey smashed 17 kills Saturday as the 14th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team stayed undefeated with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-21 sweep of Dixie State at the GNAC/Pac West Crossover at Nicholson Pavilion.

UAA (8-0) also got nine kills and seven digs from freshman outside hitter Leah Swiss, who was one of three Seawolves to hit above .500 on the day.

The Red Storm (3-5) was led by 12 kills and 10 digs from outside hitter Delayne Daniel but the St. George, Utah, club could not slow down the Seawolf offense, which hit better than .300 for the sixth straight match.

UAA connected at a .390 overall clip thanks to Mackey's .517 percentage (17 kills-2 errors-29 attacks), Swiss's .533 percentage (9-1-15) and senior middle blocker Caitlin Hanson's .600 percentage (7-1-10). Meanwhile, senior outside hitter Katelynn Zanders tallied nine kills as the former South Anchorage High School star moved up to No. 3 on the program's all-time list with 1,136, passing Jackie Matthisen (1,134, 2009-11).

The Seawolves never trailed in the first two sets before falling behind 10-7 midway through the third. Dixie State maintained its advantage until back-to-back kills by Zanders gave UAA a 17-16 lead. The Red Storm went up 19-18 on Daniel's service ace, but that would be the final highlight for last season's West Region runners-up, as UAA responded to claim seven of the last nine rallies, including four kills by Mackey.

Junior setter Morgan Hooe dished 44 assists to go with three kills and a pair of aces, while junior middle blocker Erin Braun had four kills on .400 hitting and a team-high three total blocks. Freshman libero Kyla Militante-Amper paced UAA again along the back row with a match-high 15 digs.

The Seawolves can tie the best start in program history (10-0, 1988) with wins in their first two Great Northwest Athletic Conference matches when they visit Western Oregon (Thurs., Sept. 17, 6 p.m. ADT) and league newcomer Concordia (Sat., Sept. 19. ADT).
