Devine, Seawolves surge past Saints in 2nd half

ANCHORAGE – Junior forward Alysha Devine matched her career-high with 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds Saturday to propel nationally top-ranked Alaska Anchorage to a 78-52 victory over Saint Martin's in women's basketball action at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (22-1, 9-1 GNAC) also got 13 points from senior guard Jessica Madison as they won their 10th in a row and remained tied with Montana State Billings for first place at the midpoint of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference season.

The Saints (5-12, 3-7) were led by forward Megan Wiedeman's 18 points and 12 rebounds. Wiedeman shot 6 of 9 from the floor but the rest of her teammates were held to 11-of-40 accuracy (.275).

Despite forging a 15-9 lead after one quarter, UAA found itself unable to create distance against their visitors from Lacey, Wash., and held a mere 35-29 advantage at halftime. Freshman forward Hannah Wandersee came off the bench for all of her six points on 3-of-4 shooting in the half, with the rest of her teammates coming to the rescue in the final 20 minutes.

Senior Jenna Buchanan hit a three-pointer to kick-start the offense and Devine added four straight points as the lead quickly ballooned to 42-29 in less than two minutes. Madison drilled a three-pointer to continue the charge, and the Seawolves went up 50-31 before the Saints connected on their second field goal of the half.

Senior Megan Mullings pushed the lead to 63-42 on a nice feed from Kiki Robertson at the 7:27 mark, with the advantage stretching to 78-48 in the final two minutes.

Mullings collected 10 points and six rebounds to extend her double-figure scoring streak to 10 games, and Robertson was all over the stat sheet with six points, six assists, three steals and a season-high seven rebounds.

Senior guard Christina Davis added seven points and five assists, while Buchanan dished four assists and made four steals. Senior guard Adriana Dent had five of UAA's 15 steals to come one shy of her career high and help force 24 Saints turnovers.

The Seawolves hit the road next week for two games, beginning Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. showdown against intrastate rival Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center.

NOTES: Madison moved into ninth place on UAA's career scoring list, with her 1,144 points surpassing current assistant coach Alysa Horn (1,134, 2009-13) … Buchanan extended her school record for consecutive games with at least one three-pointer to 27 … Madison also suited up for her 109th career game in Green & Gold, tying for 8th place on the program's all-time list.
