#12 UAA repels #25 Lancers at D2 Showcase

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Sophomore Leah Swiss blasted 17 kills and senior setter Morgan Hooe delivered another solid outing to lift No. 12 Alaska Anchorage to a 23-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-15 victory over No. 25 California Baptist on Saturday at the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase at the Wolves' Den.

The Seawolves (9-1) overcame a slow start to earn their eighth straight win, getting 36 assists, five kills on .556 hitting, nine digs and three aces from Hooe. Sophomore outside hitter Chrisalyn Johnson added 10 kills and sophomore libero Kyla Militante-Amper made a match-high 21 digs as UAA improved to 3-0 against fellow nationally ranked clubs.

The Lancers (5-3), from Riverside, Calif., were led by 17 kills and 12 digs from outside hitter Lauren Hackett, but the Pacific West Conference club was out-hit .227 to .132 and victimized by 11 Seawolf aces.

After nearly rallying from a 24-18 hole in the first set, UAA quickly reversed course in the second, jumping to a 12-6 lead on three straight kills from freshman Diana Fa'amausili, Johnson and senior Erin Braun. The advantage stretched to 22-14 on another Johnson kill, and a late CBU comeback would fall short.

The Seawolves nearly lost a 12-4 lead to begin the third set, allowing the Lancers to creep within 14-12 on two straight Hackett kills, but they answered with six straight points of their own, including two blocks by Braun.

Leading 7-6 early in the fourth, Swiss smashed a kill off the block to begin a 7-0 surge that wound up being the clincher.

Coming off a career-high 26 kills on Thursday's win over No. 15 Cal State San Bernardino and 13 in Friday's win over Dixie State, Swiss continued her outstanding play with a .304 attack percentage against the Lancers, committing just three errors on 46 attempts. The All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference outside hitter added four aces and no service errors, plus six digs and two block assists. She also tied her personal best with three assists for the second match in a row.

Meanwhile, Hooe failed to commit an attack error for the second straight match as the returning All-GNAC and AVCA Third Team All-American moved up to No. 3 on UAA's career assists list. The former South Anchorage High School star now has 2,866 helpers, passing Shana Purvis (2,855, 1991-96).

Braun finished with six kills and three total blocks, freshman Vanessa Hayes had four kills and three total blocks, and sophomore Taylor Noga contributed 10 digs.

UAA finishes play at the Showcase with a 6:30 p.m. ADT showdown against host Sonoma State.
