#14 Seawolves blank Warriors in SpringHill Suites Invite

ANCHORAGE – Sophomores Leah Swiss and Chrisalyn Johnson combined for 24 kills Friday night as the 14th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team won its fourth match in a row – all by sweep – with a 25-23, 25-11, 25-19 whitewashing of Stanislaus State in the SpringHill Suites Invitational at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (5-1) also got more outstanding play from senior setter Morgan Hooe, who accumulated 34 assists, 17 digs and four kills. Now 3-0 in round-robin action, UAA can secure its second straight SpringHill Suites title with a win the tourney finale Saturday (7:30 p.m.) against 19th-ranked Arkansas Fort Smith (2-0).

The Warriors (1-1) were paced by 14 kills and 14 digs from outside hitter Blair Ehrlich, while setter Maddi Seidl had 28 assists and seven digs for the visitors from Turlock, Calif., and the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

UAA took control midway through the first set and dominated the action most of the way, getting 13 kills on .324 hitting, eight digs, three aces and no service errors from Swiss – a returning All-GNAC outside hitter. Meanwhile, Johnson slammed 11 kills on .267 hitting as the Seawolves out-hit the Warriors .301 to .136 overall.

The most drama came late the first frame when Stanislaus State repelled four straight set points to draw within 24-23. Hooe then delivered in the clutch, feeding a quick dish to freshman middle blocker Vanessa Hayes for one of her four kills.

Sophomore libero Kyla Militante-Amper had 18 digs and sophomore Taylor Noga contributed nine digs and a pair of aces, while senior Erin Braun was flawless on offense, hitting .600 with six kills and no errors.

Stanislaus State returns to the court for two matches Saturday, facing Arkansas Fort Smith at 11:30 a.m. and Rollins at 4:30 p.m.
