BILLINGS, Mont. – Freshman middle blocker Eve Stephens accounted for seven of her 21 kills in the fifth set Thursday to help the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team capture a 20-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-27, 15-10 victory over Rocky Mountain College at the Fortin Center.

Playing their final non-conference match of the regular season, the Seawolves (9-2) also got 15 kills on .364 hitting from junior outside hitter Vanessa Boyer as they improved to 3-1 in five-set matches this year.

Winners of 10 straight and ranked No. 6 in NAIA, the Rocky Mountain rallied from a 23-21 deficit in the fourth set and took a 2-0 lead to begin the fifth, but the hosts then succumbed to a 6-0 Seawolf run that eventually decided the match. The match counted as an exhibition for the Battlin' Bears, leaving their record at 11-1.

“I was pleased with the way our players responded to the adjustments we made after the first set,” said UAA head coach Chris Green. “We looked good at times when we found our offensive rhythm, but we need to be more consistent from beginning to end. Rocky is an excellent team and this win will continue to help us build confidence for some big upcoming league tests.”

Chrisalyn Johnson finished with 12 kills and four total blocks, including set points in the second and third frames, while senior Tara Melton had 12 kills on .308 hitting and five block assists.

Sophomore libero Anjoilyn Vreeland led the visitors with 25 digs, and freshman setter Ellen Floyd tallied 30 assists and a personal-best 18 digs.

The Seawolves stay in town to face Montana State Billings (6-2, 0-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) on Friday at 5 p.m. ADT at Alterowitz Gymnasium.
