ANCHORAGE – Senior point guard
Yazmeen Goo delivered 14 points and four assists as No. Alaska Anchorage used a tough defensive performance to outlast No. 23 Westminster for a 69-56 women's basketball victory in the final game of the Seawolf Hoops Classic on Saturday at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (5-0) also got 11 points and seven rebounds from junior center
Tennae Voliva and 10 points, three rebounds, three assists, three steals and no turnovers from senior guard
Safiyyah Yasin, who joined Goo – named the event's Most Outstanding Player – on the all-tournament team.
The Griffins (5-1) were led by 14 points and five rebounds from forward Hunter Krebs, plus 11 points on 3-of-3 three-point shooting from reserve guard Abby Mangum. The visitors from Salt Lake City and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference also got seven points, nine rebounds and four assists from all-tourney performer Sarah McGinley, but were hurt by 19 turnovers.
"I can't say enough our defensive effort today," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team committed just eight turnovers of its own. "We did an excellent job of getting in their passing lanes and disrupting their offensive flow, and that started to lead to some buckets for us on the other end in the second half. If we can keep improving on today's performance, I see good things continuing to happen for us as the season wears on."
Westminster took a 20-18 edge after the first quarter and led 30-28 when Krebs nailed a three-pointer with three minutes left before the half. Goo snapped a 32-32 tie with a layup that gave UAA the lead for good with 1:02 on the clock, and
Kimani Fernandez's three-pointer made it 37-32 at the break.
The Seawolves forced seven turnovers in the third quarter as they slowly extended to a 54-42 lead with 10 minutes left, and Westminster never got closer than 62-51 with 4:10 remaining.
Goo shot 5 of 11 from the floor and 4 of 5 at the charity stripe as she came one point shy of tying her career high. Voliva shot 4 of 5 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds, while Yasin shot 5 of 7 from inside the arc and added three rebounds.
Fernandez finished with seven points, and senior forward
Amelia Motz came off the bench with season highs of six points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard
Stephanie Jackson had four points, three assists, one block, three steals and no turnovers as well.
The Seawolves make their farthest regular-season road trip in several seasons when they travel next week for three games in Florida, beginning Wednesday at 10 a.m. against Lynn. Check the women's basketball schedule page at GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
