PARK CITY, UTAH – Alaska Anchorage alum JC Schoonmaker was named to the US Ski Team A Team for the 2022-23 season.
"We are very excited for JC to be named to the US Ski Team A team," said UAA associate head coach Trond Flagstad. "It is well deserved and a testimony to his dedication and hard work over the last five years. It's nice to know that he will get the support he needs to be able to reach the next level in his career."
Schoonmaker, a native of Tahoe City, Calif., was an All-American and an Academic All-American during his career at UAA. He represented the United States at the FIS World Championships and the Beijing Olympics. Schoonmaker finished ninth in the team sprint with teammate Ben Ogden, finished 13th in the freestyle sprints and 66th in the 15-kilometer classic at the Beijing Olympics. He won three medals at the 2022 US National Championships, a gold in the freestyle sprint, and bronze medals in the classic sprint and 15-kilometer classic race.
Schoonmaker will open the 2022-23 season in Ruka, Finland Nov. 25-27.
Joining Schoonmaker on the US Ski Team will be former Seawolf Hailey Swirbul. Swirbul, a native of El Jebel, Colo., was named to the B Team. She competed for the Seawolves for two years (2016-18) and was the 2018 NCAA Runner-up in the 15-kilometer freestyle.
