ANCHORAGE – Newcomers Sawyer Storms and Da'Zhon Wyche each delivered collegiate bests to help the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team pull away late for an 87-65 victory over Midway on Friday at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (2-0) got double-figure scoring from six different players, including 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting from Storms, as they ended the game on a 22-5 run. A transfer from fellow NCAA Div. II program Chaminade, Storms equaled his collegiate scoring high with 19 points and established a new personal best with three blocks, along with four rebounds and four assists.
Meanwhile, Wyche scored 14 points and topped his previous bests from his days at Texas-Tyler with 12 assists and six steals. The former West Anchorage High School star also went without a turnover in 27 minutes as his six swipes tied the 10th-most in program history.
The Eagles were led by 28 points on 5-of-9 three-point shooting from guard Donnie Miller, plus a game-high nine rebounds from forward Tobias Thompson, helping the NAIA visitors from Kentucky won the rebounding battle 37-30.
"We experimented a lot with our lineups tonight, trying to see how different groups played together," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose team beat Midway 87-63 to open the season Thursday. "Once we went back to a more traditional substitution pattern, I think we responded well to close things out."
Despite trailing only briefly in the opening minutes, the Seawolves found themselves tied 37-37 when the Eagles made 11 of their last 16 field goals to end the opening half. UAA took advantage of the last possession, however, with Wyche feeding
AJ Garrity for an open three at the buzzer to regain the lead.
The Seawolves held on to the lead throughout the second half but could not pull away until the final eight minutes. After Will VanHook cut Midway's deficit to 66-60 with a putback at the 7:53 mark, Storms dunked home a pass from Wyche, who then assisted on a short jumper by Jaedon Bradley. The 11-0 surge ended at the 4:28 mark when Storms fed sophomore guard Lachlan Viney for a layup to make it 77-60.
Viney and junior guard
Tyson Gilbert finished with 13 points apiece, while Bradley and junior guard Jaron Williams each scored 12 points, with Williams adding three steals.
The Seawolves are back in action Thursday at 6 p.m. ADT with an exhibition game at NCAA Div. I foe UC Irvine. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for live links.
