Billings claims OT victory in league opener, 81-77

ANCHORAGE – Junior guard Dathan Satchell led five Alaska Anchorage players in double figures with 19 points, but Montana State Billings hit a late game-tying three-pointer and earned an 81-77 victory in overtime Thursday in both teams' Great Northwest Athletic Conference season opener at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (4-4, 0-1 GNAC) also got 16 points and eight rebounds from junior forward Jaedon Bradley as they fell in overtime for the second time in four games.

The Yellowjackets (5-2, 1-0) were led by 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists from guard Carrington Wiggins, while forward Bilal Shabazz finished with 18 points – including the tying three with 0.3 seconds left – and nine rebounds.

Coming off two victories last week, the Seawolves got off to a hot start, building a 31-19 lead and claiming a 34-29 advantage at the break.

But the visitors would make their move after halftime, scoring the first 19 points to take a 48-34 lead on Wiggins's three-pointer with 14 minutes remaining.

UAA would slowly carve into the deficit, pulling within 50-44 on a Satchell trey with 12 minutes to go and slicing it to 63-58 on Bradley's fastbreak layup at the 5:54 mark.

Tyson Gilbert made it 64-64 on a three-pointer with 3:25 to play, and Wyche race downcourt for a fastbreak layup to go up 68-67 with two minutes remaining.

After a pair of defensive stands, Bradley extended UAA's lead to 70-67 with two free throws with 6.1 seconds left. The Yellowjackets inbounded with 3.4 seconds left in the Seawolf frontcourt following a foul, and Wiggins flipped a pass to Shabazz, who nailed his three-pointer from the wing to force the extra session.

Despite rallying from three deficits to forge ties, UAA could never take the lead in overtime, and Wiggins hit the eventual game-winning baseline jumper to make it 79-77 with 1:32 remaining. Wyche missed a chance to tie when his layup attempt bounced out with six seconds left, leading to clinching free throws by Shabazz.

Satchell shot 7 of 9 from the field and 5 of 7 from long range, while Wyche finished with 15 points and three assists. Lachlan Viney and Sawyer Storms each had 10 points for UAA, which returns to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to face Seattle Pacific.
