ANCHORAGE – Senior guard
Da'Zhon Wyche led a late Alaska Anchorage comeback with 27 points and eight assists Saturday, but hot-shooting Seattle Pacific held on down the stretch to earn a 90-87 men's basketball victory at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (4-5, 0-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 16 points on perfect shooting from senior guard
AJ Garrity as they fell by five points or less for the fifth time, including a pair of overtime setbacks.
The Falcons (5-3, 1-1) were led by 20 points and four rebounds from guard Zack Paulsen and 19 points and eight assists from forward Shaw Anderson as they shot 63.5 percent (33 of 52) from the field, making 27 of their 33 two-point attempts.
Entering the night with the all-time series tied at 42 wins apiece, Saturday night turned out to be another classic UAA-SPU affair, featuring six ties and six lead changes.
Despite a 50-44 halftime deficit, the Seawolves roared back to claim a 61-61 tie on
Evan Hoosier's only basket of the game with 13:08 to play.
The Falcons responded, however, getting eight points from Anderson during a 17-3 surge over the next five minutes to go ahead for good.
Garrity scored six straight points to start UAA's final surge, and Wyche fed
Sawyer Storms for a layup to make it an 86-82 deficit with 2:56 left. Wyche scored in the paint 90 seconds later, then answered Trey Evans' putback basket with another layup to make it 88-86 with 36 seconds on the clock.
UAA's
Tyson Gilbert deflected a pass on the ensuing SPU possession to set up the Seawolves with a chance to tie or take the lead, but Wyche missed the first of two free throws after he was fouled on a layup attempt with 6.2 seconds showing.
SPU guard Syon Blackmon made two free throws for the game's final points with five seconds left, and Wyche's three-point attempt at the buzzer was no good.
Wyche finished with 12-of-24 marksmanship and just two turnovers in 38 minutes, while Garrity made all five of his field-goal and free-throw attempts. Garrity also made his only three-pointer, improving to 11-of-13 accuracy from long range this year.
Storms finished with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting, five rebounds and three assists for UAA, which lost despite shooting a season-best 54.7 percent (35 of 64) as a team.
Jaedon Bradley had nine points and four rebounds, and Gilbert had eight points for the Seawolves, who take a 24-day break from regular-season action after tonight. UAA plays its final non-conference games Dec. 28-29 against Portland Bible College at the Alaska Airlines Center.
