Local products power 81-59 victory over Nanooks

ANCHORAGE – Da'Zhon Wyche scored 24 points and fellow Anchorage native Jaron Williams added 16 points Saturday to help the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to an 81-59 victory over Alaska Fairbanks at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (7-5, 1-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got nine points and three steals from junior guard Dathan Satchell as they outscored the visitors 31-6 in points off turnovers, forcing 30 giveaways.

The Nanooks (6-5, 1-2) were led by 14 points from forward Tyler Mrus, but could not take advantage of a 41-15 edge in rebounding.

"I thought it was a good win for us against a quality team," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose program won its 19th straight home game against the Nanooks. "Fairbanks is very good defensively, they're big, and they're usually efficient offensively. We needed to have a great night with our defense and we did. We kept our defense tight, and we did a great job of going from our press into our halfcourt defense. Then offensively we had a lot of guys step up, with Da'Zhon doing what he does, and getting a nice game from others – Jaron, Dathan with three big threes, Sawyer (Storms), Lachlan (Viney) and Tyson (Gilbert) among them."

Playing their first game against a fellow NCAA Div. II opponent since Dec. 3, the Seawolves trailed for only one possession, using an early 11-2 run to take control.

Leading 27-24 with six minutes left in the first half, UAA got a layup from Viney, a three-pointer by Williams and a traditional three-point play by Wyche to take its first double-digit lead.

The Nanooks would score the opening basket of the second half to draw within 44-36, but the Seawolves slowly stretched their advantage, going up 64-44 on Satchell's three-pointer with 8:53 to play.

Wyche shot 8 of 14 from the field, 4 of 6 from long range and 4 of 5 on free throws, along with three assists and five steals. The former West Anchorage High School star capped his night with a 30-foot swish on UAA's final basket with 45 seconds left.

Meanwhile, Williams shot 4 of 8 from the field (2-3 3FGs) and 6 of 7 on free throws, along with three assists, scoring double figures for the first time against D-II competition.

AJ Garrity finished with nine points and four assists, Gilbert had eight points, and Storms contributed six points (3-5 FG), five rebounds and three assists for UAA, which committed only seven turnovers.

The Seawolves play their first GNAC road games next week, starting Thursday with a 6:30 p.m. AST tip against Central Washington. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
