Skiers post top-10 finishes

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLO. – The University of Alaska Anchorage posted a trio of top-10 finishes on the final day of the RMISA Championships.

Astrid Stav led the Seawolves in the women's race finishing seventh in the 15-kilometer race in a time of 47:28. Karly Coyne was 12th (50:18).

JC Schoonmaker and Espen Persen each finished in the top-10 of the men's 20-kilometer race placing seventh (52:52) and 10th (54:07).

Magnus Noroey was 11th (54:09), Sigurd Roenning 18th (56:10) and Peter Hinds 21st (57:01).

"We knew going into these races that the altitude would be tough, but today was much better for us," said associate head coach Trond Flagstad. "The boys were solid with three in the top-11, with JC leading the way in seventh. I am happy that our two girls were both in top-12. Astrid had another solid seventh place and Karly in 12th had one of her best placings in her college career. Unfortunately Tuva is a little sick and was not able to start today.

"We feel confident going into the NCAA that we will improve. This was a good start on the 2022 NCAA campaign kicking off our altitude acclimatizing period before the NCAA's in Utah."

UAA finished fifth out of nine teams at the RMISA/NCAA Regional Championships.

The Alpine team was in action today competing in an exhibition dual slalom event.

Didrik Nilsen entered the bracket as the 12th seed and would advance all the way to the final finishing second.

The UAA men would tie for the win in the men's competition with Colorado with 86 points.

Hunter Eid was sixth, Leon Nikic 10th, Jan Ronner 11th, Olav Sanderberg 12th and Moro Bamber 21st.

Ashleigh Alexander finished eighth and Alyssa Hill was 10th to pace the Seawolves in the women's dual slalom.

Kristina Natalenko was 12th and Nicole Mah 13th.

"Today was a great way for Didrik to end his collegiate career," said head coach Sparky Anderson. "Second place in the parallel slalom, and he led the boys to an overall team win. Exciting to be part of this new head-to-head race format. The girls went full throttle and gave this exceptional field a good run for their money. Looking forward to a quick homestand and preparing for the national championships."

Qualifiers for the NCAA Championships will be announced next week.

The NCAA Championships will take place in Soldier Hollow and Park City, Utah March 9-12.
