ANCHORAGE – The Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team unveiled its
2022-23 schedule Thursday, highlighted by the return of one of Alaska's greatest sporting traditions – the Great Alaska Shootout.
Now co-sponsored by Arctic Slope Regional Corporation and ConocoPhillips Alaska, the four-team tournament will be known at the ASRC/ConocoPhillips Great Alaska Shootout, and will take place Nov. 18-19 at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The 2022 Shootout will feature the host Seawolves against NCAA Div. I programs La Salle, Pepperdine and UC Riverside, which will play in a true bracket format.
"We are incredibly excited to bring back the Great Alaska Shootout," said UAA coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team won the tournament in its last edition in 2017. "The Shootout was widely considered one of the premier multi-team events in collegiate women's basketball, so to be able to bring it back will be a blessing to our state and our game. We are incredibly grateful for the support of ASRC and ConocoPhillips Alaska and their commitment to make this possible. Their commitment to our state and university has been incredible, and we cannot wait to showcase a celebration of Alaska and its cultural diversity through women's basketball here at UAA."
The ASRC/ConocoPhillips Great Alaska Shootout kicks off UAA's 15-game home schedule, along with non-conference series against fellow NCAA Div. II West Region program Biola (Nov. 25-26) and William Jewell (Dec. 10-11).
Aiming for their seventh league title in the last eight years, the Seawolves start their Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule Dec. 1 and 3 with home games against longtime rivals Montana State Billings and Seattle Pacific. Other key home dates include Jan. 12 against Central Washington, Jan. 28 against defending NCAA runner-up Western Washington, Feb. 4 against Alaska Fairbanks and Feb. 18 for senior night against Western Oregon.
The GNAC Tournament will take place Mar. 2-4 in Bellingham, Wash., with the NCAA Regional playoffs slated for Mar. 10-13.
