Second-half rally falls short at Western Oregon

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Juniors Sawyer Storms and Dathan Satchell led a huge second-half comeback effort the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team, but the Seawolves could not overcome an early hole in an 84-76 loss to Western Oregon on Thursday at the New P.E. Building.

The Seawolves (9-7, 3-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got 16 points from Satchell and 15 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals from Storms as they chopped a 47-23 halftime deficit down to a one-possession game four times in the final eight minutes.

The Wolves (6-9, 3-5) were led by 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, five rebounds and four steals from guard Daisone Hughes, plus 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting and eight rebounds from forward Cameron Benzel as they snapped a three-game losing streak.

"Our guys made the necessary adjustments and showed a lot of grit to get themselves back into that ballgame, but it just goes to show how hard it is to recover when you dig yourself that big of a hole," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. "Hopefully we can take some of our momentum from the second half today and come out strong Saturday at Saint Martin's."

After trailing by as many as 27 points late in the first half, Storms and Satchell scored twice each for the Seawolves as they outscored the hosts 20-7 over the first six minutes of the second stanza. Evan Hoosier – who came off the bench with a career-best nine points (4-5 FG) against a Div. II opponent – scored inside to make it 56-47 with 11:58 to play, and Satchell and Caleb Larsen nailed consecutive treys to slice it to 63-61 with 6:41 left.

Satchell's fourth trey made it 68-67 at the 4:41 mark, but Hughes answered with a three-pointer of his own to start a game-clinching run for the Wolves.

Storms shot 4 of 7 from the field and grabbed all of his rebounds on the offensive end, while Larsen – an Oregon native – accounted for a season-high 11 points.

Tyson Gilbert added 10 points and two assists, and junior forward Jaron Williams had six points, four rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.

The Seawolves remain on the road for their next two contests, starting Saturday with a 4:15 p.m. AST tip against Saint Martin's in Lacey, Wash. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for live video and stats links.
