ANCHORAGE (Nov. 19) – Junior center
Tori Hollingshead scored 11 points to lead a comeback effort for host Alaska Anchorage, but UAB was able to pull away late Sunday for a 63-52 victory, claiming third place in the ASRC/ConocoPhillips Great Alaska Shootout women's basketball tournament at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Blazers (3-1) were led by 11 points and eight rebounds from guard Mia Moore and nine assists from backcourt mate Denim DeShields as they outscored the hosts 38-26 in the second half.
The Seawolves – who counted the game as an exhibition – also got 10 points from junior guard
Senya Rabouin and eight rebounds from junior wing
Kya Pearson.
Playing an NCAA Div. I team for the second night in a row, the Div. II Seawolves fell behind 11-2 after six minutes. Hollingshead made a layup to get the host on track, however, and UAA tied it 15-15 when
Mia Ross made a floater in the lane off a steal by
Nessa Walsh with six minutes left in the second quarter.
Another basket by Hollingshead gave the Seawolves their largest lead at 23-17, and UAA took a 26-25 advantage into halftime.
After the visitors from the American Athletic Conference went on a 12-4 run to open the third quarter, the Seawolves bounced back with consecutive baskets from Pearson, Rabouin and Hollingshead to draw even at 37-37 at the 4:47 mark.
UAA would go on a five-minute scoreless drought, however, and could never get closer than a four-point deficit in the early stages of the fourth quarter.
Moore made the All-Tournament Team for UAB, while Hollingshead was UAA's selection.
The Seawolves return to NCAA Div. II regular-season play next week when they host Adams State (3-3) for a pair of games at the Alaska Airlines Center, Friday and Saturday, both at 5:15 p.m. AST. Find tickets and live links at GoSeawolves.com.
