Seawolves dominate Golden Eagles for weekend sweep

ANCHORAGE (Dec. 10) – Tori Hollingshead and Kya Pearson scored 12 points apiece to lead a balanced scoring effort as the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team rolled to a 78-33 victory over Clarion on Sunday at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (4-5) also got 11 points and a career-high nine rebounds from junior guard Jazzpher Evans and a 12-rebound effort from junior forward Kate Robertson, while forcing 28 turnovers and holding the visitors to .246 (14 of 57) shooting.

The Golden Eagles (0-8) were led by eight points apiece from guards Hannah Wilkerson and Sadre'a Rougeau.

"Our shots weren't going down for the most part, but we were able to offset that by getting a lot of transition baskets and locking down on the defensive end," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team beat the same squad 87-43 on Friday. "I love that we were able to win two games by wide margins without having anyone score more than 13 points all weekend. That really goes to show the balance and depth that we hoped to have with this year's team."

After outscoring the visitors from Pennsylvania 23-4 in the opening quarter Friday, UAA actually trailed 3-2 in the opening moments of the rematch. Clarion's lead would not last long, however, as the Seawolves went on a 27-0 run over the next 10 minutes.

UAA's 27-3 lead set a program record for the largest differential after one quarter, while the three points were the second-fewest allowed in the opening quarter by the Seawolves since women's college basketball went to quarters in 2015-16.

The 33 total points allowed tied for 19th on UAA's single-game defensive list and 10th-best against a fellow NCAA Div. II opponent.

The Seawolves also outrebounded the Golden Eagles 60-41, equaling the second-most boards for a UAA squad this century and the most since they grabbed 66 in a Nov. 21, 2013 win at Chaminade.

Junior forward Jaisa Gamble scored a career-high 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting to give UAA four double-figure scorers, while Hollingshead dished a career-best four assists and equaled her own team season high with four blocks.

Junior guard Elaina Mack finished with career highs of seven rebounds and three steals as well.

The Seawolves complete their non-conference slate with road games at California Collegiate Athletic Association foes Stanislaus State (Sun., Dec. 17, 1 pm AST) and San Francisco State (Tue., Dec. 19, noon AST). Find live links at GoSeawolves.com.
