Seawolves stifle Warriors for third straight win

TURLOCK, Calif. (Dec. 17) – Junior guards Jazzpher Evans and Senya Rabouin scored 13 points apiece and the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team used stifling defense Sunday to earn a 60-46 victory over Stanislaus State at Fitzpatrick Arena.

The Seawolves (5-5) also got nine points from Elaina Mack and seven points, eight rebounds, three steals and no turnovers from junior transfer Nessa Walsh, who had her best game in a UAA uniform.

The Warriors (9-5) were led by 11 points and six rebounds from guard Liliana Marques as their six-game winning streak was snapped.

"We weren't executing well offensively until the fourth quarter but our defense was terrific for the majority of the game," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy. "We also did a great job of crashing the boards, and we got a huge lift with Nessa's all-around play. Jazz really hit her stride late offensively too, and that really helped us pull away.

After a back-and-forth, low-scoring first quarter, the Seawolves edged ahead 25-21 at halftime on the strength of six points by Rabouin.

The Warriors battled back to take a brief lead at 34-32 on a three-pointer by Marques with 2:52 left in the third quarter, but the hosts would only make three more field goals the rest of the way.

After a go-ahead trey by Rabouin, Evans made the play of the game when she corralled an errant pass on an inbounds play and swished a 40-foot turnaround three-pointer at the shot-clock buzzer. The Seawolves led 41-35 after the third and continued to extend their lead through the final quarter.

Rabouin finished 5 of 8 from the field – including 2 of 4 from deep – and dished four assists, while Evans shot 4 of 5 from the field, 4 of 4 on free throws and made three steals.

Junior center Tori Hollingshead added six points, six rebounds and two blocks, and junior point guard Mia Ross chipped in seven points for UAA.

The Seawolf defense held the Warriors to a season-low .296 (16 of 54) field-goal percentage and forced 21 turnovers.

UAA concludes its non-conference schedule and California trip with a noon AST tip Tuesday at San Francisco State. Find live links at GoSeawolves.com.
