SEATTLE (Dec. 2) – Junior guard
Senya Rabouin scored 17 points and sophomore guard
Elaina Mack helped lead a big comeback, but the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team suffered another last-second defeat Saturday, falling 62-59 to Seattle Pacific at Royal Brougham Pavilion.
The Seawolves (2-5, 0-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got 12 points on four second-half three-pointers from Mack as they erased a 17-point deficit, only to see the hosts end on a 10-5 run.
The Falcons (3-5, 2-0) were led by 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting from Olivia Mayer as they won the rebounding battle 36-24 and turned 11 offensive boards into 18 second-chance points.
The loss was UAA's fourth in a one-possession game, including three one-point setbacks.
"I was proud of the fight we showed today, but we simply cannot afford to dig ourselves an early hole like that," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy. "While these have been some disheartening losses lately, I still feel like we have the makings of a good ball club, and I'm confident we will regroup and have a great week of practice leading up to some critical home games next week."
After posting a 30-point first quarter in Thursday's loss at No. 17 Montana State Billings, the Seawolves struggled out of the gate against their old rivals. SPU made 8 of 13 shots in the opening 10 minutes and took a 26-9 lead one minute into the second quarter.
UAA rallied with a 10-0 run of its own, though, and trailed just 33-29 when Rabouin nailed a three-pointer 10 seconds before the half.
Despite falling behind 48-39 after three quarters, the Seawolves finally found Mack for consecutive treys to slice it to 48-47 with 8:30 left, and the sharpshooter nailed another for a 54-52 lead with five minutes to play.
Following a pair of inside buckets by the Falcons, Mack gave UAA a 57-56 edge with her final three at the 3:50 mark, but the Falcons would answer with the next six points.
After making it 62-59 on free throws by
Jazzpher Evans, the Seawolves could not capitalize when they turned the ball over on what appeared to be their final chance with nine seconds remaining. But SPU's Hunter Beirne slipped in her own lane as she tried to dribble out the clock, and the ball went to
Mia Ross. Ross passed to
Kya Pearson for an open three-pointer, but the ball bounced off the backboard and spun around and out as the buzzer sounded.
Rabouin shot 6 of 12 from the field, while junior forward
Kate Robertson returned from a two-game injury absence to aid the comeback with 10 points (3-4 FG, 4-4 FT).
Junior forward
Jaisa Gamble had six points and a team-high four assists.
The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center to host Clarion (Pa.) University in a pair of games – Friday at 7 pm and Sunday, Dec. 10 at 2 pm. Find tickets and live links at GoSeawolves.com.
