Sweet-shooting Seawolves storm past Vikings, 89-79

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Sawyer Storms scored 21 points on near-perfect shooting and Tyson Gilbert delivered 18 points and four assists Saturday to power the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to an 89-79 victory over Western Washington at Carver Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (12-11, 6-8 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 15 points from sophomore guard Lachlan Viney as they shot 56 percent (33 of 59) and outscored the hosts 42-24 in the paint. A 6-7 junior forward, Storms shot 6 of 6 from the field and 8 of 9 at the free-throw line as the Chaminade transfer recorded his most points in GNAC play.

With its third straight win, UAA leapfrogged WWU (13-12, 6-9) for sixth place in the league standings with two weeks remaining in the regular season. Only the top six teams in the 10-team conference qualify for the GNAC Championships, set for Mar. 2-4 in Bellingham.

The Vikings were led by a career-high 15 points and six rebounds from reserve guard Matthew Mayes, but were hurt by 16 turnovers that turned into 23 Seawolf points.

"It was a great effort by our guys tonight across the board," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team forged a season split with WWU. "We had a nice flow offensively, especially in the first half. We also had balance inside and out, with our cutting getting us some layups to loosen up the three-point line."

UAA led from start to finish, grabbing a 23-13 advantage on a three-pointer by Gilbert and taking a 47-37 edge into halftime.

Dathan Satchell and Storms nailed back-to-back threes early in the second half to build a 55-40 lead, and the Vikings managed to scratch within single digits just twice in the final seven minutes.

"Defensively we did a good job of making some adjustments, and even though they didn't play big minutes our bench guys made some very solid contributions," Osborne added. "We're really looking forward to getting home and playing two tough opponents, plus honoring our seniors on Saturday."

A transfer from Colorado State-Pueblo, Gilbert shot 7 of 13 to match his UAA scoring high of 18 points, along with five rebounds, three steals and no turnovers in a team-high 33 minutes.

Garrity also delivered for the second straight game with 11 points, five rebounds, and a career-high-tying four assists, while Satchell bagged nine points on 3-of-7 long-range shooting, two assists and two steals.

Junior guard Caleb Larsen gave UAA an early lift with all nine of his points in the first half, and senior forward Vojtech Ruzek scored on both of his shots in the final 10 minutes to help squash a potential Viking run.

The Seawolves take the Alaska Airlines Center court for the final times this season on Thursday (5:15 p.m. vs Saint Martin's) and Saturday (7:30 p.m. vs Western Oregon). Surf to GoSeawolves.com for tickets and live links.
