Falcons edge Seawolves in final seconds, 72-71

SEATTLE – Lachlan Viney and AJ Garrity tallied 14 points apiece for Alaska Anchorage, but host Seattle Pacific rallied with a 9-1 game-closing run to earn a 72-71 victory Thursday night in men's basketball action at Brougham Pavilion.

The Seawolves (12-14, 6-11 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 10 points from Dathan Satchell and Jaron Williams as they lost their 10th game by six points or less.

The Falcons (16-10, 11-6) were led by 20 points from forward Shaw Anderson, who tipped in his own miss with four seconds remaining for the winning basket. Kelton Sizemore added 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting for SPU, which sits on the NCAA Tournament playoff bubble at No. 9 in the latest West Region rankings.

Meeting nearly three months after SPU's 90-87 win Dec. 3 in Anchorage, the Seawolves took control early in the rematch, scoring 10 of the first 12 points and securing a 42-33 halftime advantage.

Satchell pushed the lead to 51-40 with a three-pointer early in the second half, and UAA repelled a Falcon run with an 8-0 surge, getting consecutive baskets from Jaedon Bradley to make it 63-55 with 7:30 remaining.

Junior forward Sawyer Storms scored on a feed from Jaron Williams to give the visitors a 70-63 lead at the 3:12 mark, but that would be their final basket.

After the Falcons made it 70-70 with a free throw with 47 remaining, the Seawolves called timeout and set up Bradley for a drive to the basket, drawing a shooting foul at the 28-second mark. The junior forward made one of two free throws to retake the lead, but Anderson answered when he tapped in the miss off his own short jump shot in the final seconds.

Tyson Gilbert raced downcourt and got a decent look at a three-pointer that bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

Viney shot 5 of 8 from the field – including 3 of 4 on threes – and dished a pair of assists with no turnovers, while Williams shot 4 of 4 off the bench.

Storms led UAA with five rebounds and six assists, and Garrity grabbed a pair of steals.

The Seawolves conclude the season on the road Saturday with a 3:15 p.m. AST tip against Montana State Billings. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for live video and stats links.
