NAMPA, Idaho (Jan. 20) – Junior point guard
Senya Rabouin scored 16 points and grabbed six steals to lead a huge second-half surge for the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team in a 79-63 victory over Northwest Nazarene on Saturday at the Johnson Sports Center.
The Seawolves (11-5, 5-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 17 points apiece from juniors
Jazzpher Evans and
Tori Hollingshead as they pushed their winning streak to nine games, coming up with season highs of 24 steals and 36 turnovers forced.
Northwest Nazarene (7-8, 4-4) was led by 26 points on 8-of-11 shooting and eight rebounds from forward Madeline Gebers, but no other Nighthawk scored more than seven points.
"We made some silly mistakes in the first half that put us in a negative position with that early second-half deficit, but our ladies did an excellent job of following our game plan, and it paid off big-time," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team has not lost since Dec. 2. "Senya was terrific in controlling the flow of our offense and causing havoc in the defensive end, and Tori continued to play at the high level she's displayed lately. We're excited to get home with two huge road wins and hope we have some great crowds this week at the Alaska Airlines Center."
UAA took a six-point lead during a back-and-forth opening half that saw the hosts take a 33-31 lead on a jumper by Hilary James at the buzzer.
Gebers started the scoring in the third quarter, but the Nighthawks' momentum fizzled from there. Hollingshead swished two free throws for a 36-35 lead with 7:42 on the clock, and scored 90 seconds later to highlight a 15-2 UAA run.
After Gebers swished a three-pointer to keep her team's deficit at 58-49 with 5:09 left in the fourth quarter, Rabouin provided the final answer. The Central Arizona transfer swished a midrange jumper, then swiped the ball from Gebers and sailed in for the layup. Evans grabbed a steal five seconds later and scored herself, and Rabouin swiped another ball and fed Hollingshead for a layin – capping an 8-0 run that took just 46 seconds.
Rabouin shot 6 of 12 from the field and established a UAA season high with her six steals.
On the heels of an 18-point, 12-rebound effort in Thursday's 68-62 win at Central Washington, Hollingshead shot 7 of 13, along with eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Evans shot 6 of 10 from the field and 4 of 4 at the free-throw line, along with three steals.
Junior point guard
Mia Ross also provided a big lift with nine points on 3-of-3 three-point accuracy and a career-high-tying three steals.
The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center to conclude the first half of the GNAC campaign, hosting Western Oregon on Thursday (5:15 pm) and Saint Martin's on Saturday (5:15 pm). Find tickets and live links at GoSeawolves.com.
