SHREVEPORT, La. (Feb. 11) – Freshman
Claudia Lessig earned the victory in her first career all-around performance, propelling the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team to the team win as well Sunday in the Centenary quad meet at the Gold Dome.
The Seawolves (7-5) finished with 191.875 points to top Talladega (191.175), Centenary (189.150) and Greenville (187.750), earning their first win in a meet with at least four teams since the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Mar. 20, 2009.
Lessig finished in the top four on all four events to forge a 38.825 all-around, tying the No. 24 score in program history. The Spring, Texas, native tied atop the uneven bars podium with 9.725, along with third-place finishes on vault (9.75) and beam (9.7). Her 9.65 floor score was UAA's second best on that apparatus.
"We're proud of today's performance that was packed with season and career highlights for the whole team," said UAA head coach
Marie-Sophie Boggasch. "Led by Claudia's all-around debut, this was a breakout performance for us today."
UAA's top four scorers tallied at least 9.55 on all four events, with junior
Montana Fairbairn helping lead the way. The Strathmore, Alberta, native finished runner-up on floor exercise with a 9.7 and posted UAA's second-best scores on vault (9.7) and beam (9.65).
Redshirt freshman
Jada Niles also made the podium, tying for third on uneven bars with a 9.6.
Other top scores Sunday included a 9.6 from
Marcela Bonifasi on beam, a 9.625 from
Ariana DeSouza on floor, and 9.575s from
Brooklyn Kopsack and
Avery Tillmanns on vault.
UAA's vault total of 48.025 was a season high.
The Seawolves get an 11-day break before their next competition Feb. 23 at Illinois State.
