SHREVEPORT, La. (Feb. 9) – Freshman
Claudia Lessig and senior
Jessica Johnson swept the top spots on balance beam Friday to help the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team to a 191.525 total at the
Centenary tri-meet at the Gold Dome.
The Seawolves (4-5) also got strong showings from senior
Montana Fairbairn and sophomore
Ariana DeSouza as they defeated host Centenary (189.150) and lost narrowly to first-time opponent Talladega (192.200).
A freshman from Spring, Texas, Lessig scored a 9.875 on beam to earn her first victory and become just the sixth Seawolf in 40 years of program history to reach that plateau. Johnson tied her career high and the 16th-best beam score in UAA history with a 9.85, along with a career-high 9.775 by DeSouza. UAA's 48.600 total ranked No. 12 in program history and was the third top-20 beam mark in the last three meets.
UAA also excelled on floor with a season-best 48.300 total, led by a runner-up 9.825 from
Silje Hildebrand, a 9.7 from Fairbairn and a 9.675 from DeSouza. It was a career- and UAA season-high floor score for Hildebrand, a senior from Yakima, Wash.
"We had some really great high points during the meet, but also some costly mistakes unfortunately," said UAA head coach
Marie-Sophie Boggasch. "We need to trust our training on the competition floor to finally reach the results this team is capable of. We're very happy with some individual performances, but know we have work to do as a team."
Lessig also made the podium on bars with a personal-best 9.725, while freshman
Jada Niles (9.625), junior
Hayley Perkins (9.575) and senior
Emily Walker (9.525) boosted a 47.400 total.
Fairbairn led the Seawolves with a runner-up 9.625 on vault, along with a 9.475 from freshman
Maddy Murphy.
The Seawolves return to the Gold Dome on Sunday for a 9:30 a.m. AST start in a quad meet against Centenary, Talladega and Greenville. Find links to live video and scoring at GoSeawolves.com.
