ANCHORAGE (Feb. 23) – Led by event victories from senior
Montana Fairbairn and sophomore
Claudia Lessig, the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team posted a pair of historic team totals Sunday in a 194.575-193.300 dual-meet loss to Sacramento State at the Alaksa Airlines Center.
The Hornets won with 194.575 points, led by a 39.150 all-around from senior Emma Morgenthaler.
The Seawolves got a 9.9 from Fairbairn on floor as the Canadian tied the fifth-best mark by a Seawolf in 40 years of program history. Career highs from junior
Ariana DeSouza (9.85), senior
Grace Costello (9.8) and freshman
Hannah Boyd (9.8) helped UAA post 49.025 on floor – the second-best total ever, barely missing the school record of 49.075 from the 2004 MPSF Championships.
UAA's 193.300 total was No. 12 on that school list, thanks in large part to a career-high 9.8 on beam from Lessig to tie atop the beam podium. Fairbairn scored 9.675 and Boyd 9.6 to boost a 48.050 team score on beam.
"Our ladies did a terrific job of translating their performance in practice into both competitions this weekend, and it paid off with great scores, going over 193 in back-to-back meet," said UAA head coach
Marie-Sophie Boggasch, whose team earned 193.325 in Friday's meet. "It's awesome to see so many career highs today, and I couldn't be happier for Montana to put up such a historic performance in her final regular-season home meet."
Junior
Madelyn Gomez tallied a career-high 9.75 on bars to tie for third on the podium and aid a 47.950 total, along with a 9.725 from Lessig.
On vault, UAA topped the 48-point barrier for the fifth straight meet with a season-best 48.275 total. Fairbairn led the way with a 9.725, along with 9.7s from Boyd (career high) and sophomore
Jamilia Duffus.
