ANCHORAGE (June 17) – The state's top player will play collegiately in front of his hometown fans as Alaska Anchorage men's basketball coach
Rusty Osborne announced Tuesday that Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year
Muhammed Sabally has signed a scholarship agreement with the Seawolves.
A 6-4, 190-pound guard, Sabally repeated as the AABC 4A Player of the Year in 2024-25 after leading Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School to its third straight ASAA 4A state title. As a senior, he averaged 14 points and five assists per game in helping the T-birds to a 27-2 mark, while topping 1,000 career points.
"We are thrilled to add Muhammed to our program," said Osborne, whose Seawolves will feature six Alaskans on its 2025-26 roster. "He continues a long line of Alaska POY/all-state athletes to wear Green & Gold. He and Marek (Hajdukovich) are not only outstanding talents, they lend some balance to our class structure and represent a bright future. Mo has been one of the most successful players in recent Alaska high school basketball memory, so he brings a 'winning mentality.' He has been coached and prepared well by Coach (Chuck) Martin, who understands what is needed to be successful at the college level."
As a junior in 2023-24, Sabally led East to a 28-1 record and was named
MaxPreps Alaska Player of the Year, averaging 13.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists. He paced East with 23 points in the 2024 state title-game victory over Thunder Mountain, and had 20 points and seven rebounds in the 2023 state title-game win over West Valley. A second team AABC All-State performer as a sophomore and a contributor on East's 2022 state runner-up squad, Sabally helped the T-birds to a 106-10 record over his four seasons, with just six losses against Alaska competition.
"Mo has good size, is versatile and can play both wing positions," Osborne added. "He has the ability to score, but his best tool right now is his ability to facilitate for others, both inside and out, with great vision and passing. We are excited to watch Mo continue to improve as he competes on a daily basis with other talented teammates. He has a chance to be a special player in the GNAC over the coming years."
Sabally becomes the sixth member of UAA's 2025 recruiting class, alongside transfers
Cole Johnson (6-1/180, G, Kaysville, Utah/Farmington HS/Colorado Northwestern CC),
Akok Machar (6-7/180, G, Adelaide, Australia/Texas-Tyler),
Elijah Mobley (6-1/190, G, Chicago, Ill./Weston Ranch [Calif.] HS/Las Positas College) and
Sylas Williams (6-7/210, F, Bothell, Wash./Jackson HS/Skagit Valley College), and fellow incoming freshman
Marek Hajdukovich (6-2/185, G, Anchorage/Dimond HS).
He also becomes the sixth Alaskan on the Seawolves' 2025-26 roster, joining Hajdukovich, senior
Hasaan Herrington (East Anchorage), sophomore
Parker Kroon (Wasilla), senior
Bishop Tosi (Anchorage/Bartlett) and sophomore
Luke Johnston (Anchorage/Dimond).
