FAIRBANKS (Dec. 6) -
Peter Bullock scored a game-high 21 points and point guard Bryson Vaughan scored 17 to propel the UAA men's basketball team to its first victory of the season, 70-62 over arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center tonight.
UAA (1-6, 1-0 GNAC) benefited from its first plus-50 percent shooting night, going 25 for 47 from the field, including 5 of 10 on three-pointers. UAF (0-8, 0-1) had four players in double-figures, led by center John Early's 17 points.
The Seawolves held a 33-29 halftime advantage and stretched that to 39-31 on a pair of threes from Bullock and Vaughan before UAF made a run. The Nanooks' Steve Towne hit a three-pointer to make it 39-38 with 14:06 remaining, but UAA then started a run that made the score 59-47 with 6:16 left.
The Nanooks wouldn't go away, though, cutting UAA's margin to 63-59 with 3:04 to go. But Bullock then stepped up, taking a pass from Vaughan, jamming it home and drawing a foul. The 6-6 sophomore completed the three-point play to make it 66-59 with 2:34 showing, and the Nanooks would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Vaughan, a junior from Malad, Idaho, had the best offensive game of his UAA career, shooting 4-for-5 overall, 2-for-2 on threes and 7-for-8 from the free throw line.
Junior forward Shane Bannarbie had a tremendous overall game with 11 points (5-6 FG), six rebounds, two assists and four steals.
UAA is now 54-22 all-time against UAF, including 24-12 in Fairbanks. Thursday's win snapped a two-game Patty Center losing streak for UAA.
The Seawolves are off for semester finals before traveling to Laramie, Wyo., for a Dec. 22 matchup with Division I Wyoming.
