ANCHORAGE (Nov. 20) - Peter Bullock had 30 points and 13 rebounds, and Adam Fitt-Chappell and Kemmy Burgess scored 20 points apiece as the UAA men's basketball team cruised to a 101-72 season-opening win over Hawaii Pacific in the AT&T Alascom Jamboree on Thursday.
The Seawolves shot an impressive 54.3 percent, helped by junior point guard Aaron Lawrence's 10 assists. Hawaii Pacific (0-1) was led by Aaron Abrams, who scored 18 of his 25 points in the first half.
A Wells Fargo Sports Complex crowd of 889 watched the Seawolves come back from a 20-10 deficit in the first half to take a 49-39 lead at the break. Mark Drake (13 points) came off the bench to spark the run with back-to-back three-pointers, and Burgess added another to make it 20-19.
HPU went back up by six before the Seawolves ended the half on a 26-10 run. Bullock, who scored 30 or more for the fifth time in his career, had 20 in the first half on 9-of-12 shooting. He also had 13 rebounds for his 35th career double-double, and he moved passt Jason Kaiser (1993-95, 1,363 points) for No. 4 on UAA's all-time scoring list with 1,380.
Lawrence, a transfer from West Valley (Calif.) College, scored six points and had five steals to go along with his 10-to-1 assist-turnover ratio. UAA's other two newcomers had encouraging debuts as Burgess went 8 for 13 from the floor - including 4 of 7 on threes - and junior forward Adam Simpson had four rebounds and three blocks off the bench in just 14 minutes.
Fitt-Chappell struggled to five points on 1-of-5 shooting in the first half, but sparked the Seawolves early in the second as they extended their lead to 76-49 in just seven minutes. The sophomore swingman shot 5 of 7 in the second half, and finished 4 of 5 on three-pointers and 4 of 4 from the free throw line.
The Seawolves are back in action Friday night against Eastern Oregon (0-0) in the second game of the Jamboree. Tip-off is 7:05 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
