Seawolves come up short in Idaho

NAMPA, Idaho (Feb. 21) - Kemmy Burgess and Mark Drake had fine shooting nights from long range, but it wasn't enough to overcome Northwest Nazarene's even hotter hands as the Crusaders knocked off the Seawolves 82-71 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball game here Saturday.

UAA (17-8, 7-7 GNAC) never led against an NNU team that shot 62.8 percent, including 8 of 13 on three-pointers. Burgess finished with 17 points, while Drake scored 13. The Crusaders (10-13, 5-10) got a huge night from point guard Derek Olich, who finished with 21 points (5-7 3FG, 6-6 FT) and eight assists.

The Seawolves got themselves in an early 10-4 hole by making only one field goal in the first six and a half minutes. NNU's lead grew to 13 before UAA came back to cut it to 36-31 at halftime.

UAA forced the only tie of the night when Adam Simpson nailed a jumper that made it 42-42 with 14:30 remaining. But Olich drained consecutive threes and the Crusaders would never trail again.

The Seawolves got within 76-71 on a Burgess three-pointer with 1:11 to go and got the ball back on a turnover. However, Drake missed his only three of the night (3-for-4) on the ensuing possession, and NNU closed things out from the line.

Peter Bullock had 12 points and six rebounds for UAA, but the team's leading scorer attempted just six shots.

Meanwhile, Burgess was strong from beyond the arc, shooting 5-of-8 for the second straight game. He leads the GNAC with 50.6 percent three-point shooting.

The Seawolves will close out the home portion of their schedule with games against Central Washington (Thur., Feb. 26) and Saint Martin's (Sat., Feb. 28) at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
