Seawolves show grit in rout of Wildcats

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 26) - Peter Bullock scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the second half and the UAA men's basketball team used a stifling defense to run away with a 74-47 victory over Central Washington at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex tonight.

UAA (18-8, 8-7 GNAC) also got 17 points from Adam Fitt-Chappell and Kemmy Burgess to post a critical victory in its quest for an NCAA Tournament berth. CWU (8-16, 5-10) was led by Chris Lynn's 12 points on 3-of-15 shooting. No other Wildcat managed more than six points.

The 47 points allowed are the fewest in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game this season, and the fewest by a UAA team since a 96-45 win over Alaska Fairbanks on Feb. 24, 2001.

UAA trailed by as many as six points in the first half, but got a boost off the bench from junior forward Adam Simpson to take a 27-23 halftime lead. Simpson scored all 10 of his career-high points in the first 20 minutes, shooting 3 of 4 from the field and 3 of 3 at the free throw line.

After CWU scored the first bucket of the second half, the Seawolves put together a 10-0 spurt that featured threes by Burgess and Fitt-Chappell, an Aaron Lawrence layup and a Bullock dunk. The Wildcats, who shot 22.8 percent and committed 17 turnovers, never got within single digits again.

The Seawolves outrebounded the Wildcats by 11 in the second half to finish with a 44-38 advantage for the game. UAA is now 13-4 when pulling down more boards than its opponent.

Burgess, who came into the game shooting .506 from three-point range, went just 2 for 7. However, the junior from San Diego tied UAA's single-season record for threes with his 87th, equaling Jason Kaiser and Tai Riser (1993-94).

Bullock's 16 rebounds were a team season-high and the seventh time in his career he has grabbed 15 or more. It was also the senior's 47th career double-double, moving him into sole possession of his sixth UAA career record. Bullock will establish his final career mark when he makes his 104th start in Saturday's home finale against Saint Martin's (8 p.m.). All seven of his records were previously held by All-American Hansi Gnad (1983-87).

Bullock will be among the seven Seawolf seniors honored in a short pregame ceremony Saturday.
