ANCHORAGE (Feb. 17) -
Adam Fitt-Chappell scored a game-high 27 points, but the Seawolf men's basketball team couldn't keep up with high-scoring Western Washington in a 105-79 loss Thursday at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
UAA (10-13, 4-10 GNAC) got 18 points from freshman forward Carl Arts, while 18th-ranked WWU (18-4, 10-3) was led by 24 points apiece from Grant Dykstra and Ryan Diggs. The league-leading Vikings also set Great Northwest Athletic Conference records with 46 free throws made and 48 attempted.
The Vikings led from start to finish except for 18 seconds early in the game, jumping the on the Seawolves 23-11 in the first five-plus minutes. UAA fought back to cut it to 33-28 on a Bryan Freshwater layup with 4:53 to play in the half, but that was as close as the home team would get.
WWU pushed its second-half advantage as high as 32 points and topped the century mark against the Seawolves for the second time in as many months. Dykstra, a GNAC Player of the Year candidate, set a school record by going 14 of 14 from the free throw line, while teammate Tyler Amaya pulled down a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
James Hartman was the only other Seawolf in double figures with 10 points, and point guard Luke Cooper dished a game-high nine assists.
Fitt-Chappell's scoring effort came on 10-of-18 shooting (3-5 3FG) from the field as the junior swingman finished two points shy of his career high. It was the third time in his career that the Eagle River native topped the 25-point mark.
The Seawolves have a short turnaround before facing 17th-ranked Seattle Pacific at the WFSC, Saturday at 8 p.m.
