ARCATA, Calif. (Mar. 3) -
Mark Drake set the UAA career record for three-pointers, but the Seawolf men's basketball team couldn't overcome huge differentials in fouls and rebounds in a 85-70 to Humboldt State at East Gymnasium on Thursday.
UAA (11-15, 5-12 GNAC) was led by James Hartman's 16 points and nine rebounds, while HSU (16-10, 8-9) got 19 points from Grayson Moyer and an 11-point, 18-rebound performance from Kevin Johnson.
The Seawolves led by as many as eight points in the first half when Carl Arts (10 points, 5-6 FG) converted a pass from Hartman to make it 24-16. HSU rallied to tie it 28-28, however, and grabbed a 38-37 lead at the break.
Hartman started the second half with a three-pointer, and UAA twice pushed its lead to five points, finally taking a 58-53 on a Drake three at the 8:39 mark. The Lumberjacks answered with an 11-2 run, however, and pulled away from the foul line in the final five minutes.
HSU was 29-of-40 from the line, while UAA was just 3-of-6, never reaching the bonus in either half. The Seawolves were whistled for 29 fouls, while the home team committed only 11. The Lumberjacks' 57-31 advantage on the boards also helped doom the Seawolves.
Drake, a 6-1 senior from Shelbyville, Ind., had 11 points on three three-pointers. That gave him 240 threes for his career, breaking the UAA mark of 238 by Jim Hajdukovich (1995-99). He also made both his free throws to push his career percentage to .884, just ahead of Bryson Vaughan's school record of .874.
Adam Fitt-Chappell had 10 points for the Seawolves, while Marcus Robinson chipped in nine points and five assists.
The Seawolves end their season Saturday with a game at league rival Western Oregon.
