NAMPA, Idaho (Jan. 14) - Northwest Nazarene point guard Marcus Clift sank a jumper with 3 seconds remaining Saturday to lift his team to an 82-80 men's basketball victory over UAA at the Johnson Sports Center.
The loss was the fourth for UAA (11-7, 2-4 GNAC) in as many league road games and overshadowed a career-high scoring night for Seawolf point guard Luke Cooper, who tallied 18 points.
NNU (7-7, 2-3) was led by 22 points from senior forward Mesut Ademoglu, and won despite being outshot (53.7 percent to 46 percent) and outrebounded (34-27) by the Seawolves.
The game was tight throughout, with the Crusaders leading by between one and six points for most of the second half. UAA's James Hartman (11 points, 7 rebounds) tied it 80-80 with a pair of free throws at the 2:05 mark, and neither team could convert on their ensuing possessions. Kemmy Burgess (13 points) missed a jumper with a minute remaining, and the Crusaders got a chance for the last shot when Tim Ireland grabbed an offensive rebound with less than 35 seconds left.
That play set up the winning basket by Clift, who finished with seven points and six assists.
The loss drops the Seawolves to 1-6 this season in games decided by seven points or fewer.
Sophomore forward Joe Davis had 15 points (6-11 FG, 3-4 FT) and five rebounds for UAA, while fellow front-courter Carl Arts scored eight points on 4-of-5 shooting. Cooper, the sophomore point guard from Australia, finished 7 of 7 from the field, including four three-pointers. He also dished six assists and grabbed a career-high-tying five rebounds, but committed five turnovers as well.
The Seawolves, who are 6-0 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, return to the friendly confines next week to host Great Northwest Athletic Conference rivals Humboldt State (Thur., Jan. 19, 7:30 p.m.) and Western Oregon (Sat., Jan. 21, 7 p.m.).
