ANCHORAGE (Jan. 21) -
James Hartman scored 19 points to lead a Seawolf shooting clinic Saturday as the UAA men's basketball team dominated from start to finish in an 88-50 victory over Western Oregon at a sold-out Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
The Seawolves (13-7, 4-4 GNAC) also got 17 points from senior guard Kemmy Burgess as they posted their biggest margin of victory over a Division II opponent this season. It was also the second-biggest plurality ever in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game for UAA.
WOU (6-10, 1-6) was led by 16 points from forward Travis Kuhns and 12 rebounds from center J.T. Mitchell.
The Seawolves, who improved to 8-0 on their primary home court, held the Wolves to 35 percent shooting, including 16 percent (4-25) from three-point range. Meanwhile, UAA nailed nine of its first 11 treys and finished 9-of-14 to boost its NCAA Div. II-leading percentage to .458.
UAA shot 58.2 percent (32-55) overall from the floor and outrebounded the Wolves 33-29. WOU managed only seven assists, while Luke Cooper dished nine of UAA's 18 helpers.
Junior guard Eric Draper (4-6 3FG) scored all 13 of his points in the second half, and sophomore forward Carl Arts tallied 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting.
The Seawolves jumped to an early 7-0 lead in the first 2-plus minutes, and the visitors from Monmouth, Ore., would only briefly come within four points. After WOU cut it to 31-20 with 1:25 to play in the first half, the Seawolves closed with another 7-0 spurt, capped by Burgess' fall-away trey from 30 feet at the buzzer.
UAA then held the Wolves scoreless for the first five minutes of the second half to extend to a 44-20 advantage. After Adam Fitt-Chappell missed a three-pointer with 14:35 left, the Seawolves dented the scoreboard on 17 of their next 18 possessions to build a 78-39 advantage.
Since the GNAC was formed in 2001-02, only UAA's 102-63 win over Saint Martin's in 2002-03 has come by a wider margin.
The Seawolves now have six days to prepare for a showdown at arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks on Jan. 28. That game tips at 3 p.m. at the Patty Center and can be heard in Anchorage on AM-550 KTZN 'The Zone,' or over the internet on this site.
