ANCHORAGE ? Hofstra, led by the hot shooting of guards Zygis Sestokas, Antoine Agudio and Loren Stokes, outscored Alaska Anchorage 17-7 over the last six minutes to post a 75-65 victory and claim fourth place in the 2006 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout on Saturday.
The Pride (2-3) shot 52.2 percent on three-pointers, led by Sestokas' 6-of-7 performance.
UAA (5-2) was led by a career-high-tying 20 points from junior forward Carl Arts, who also had nine a game-best nine rebounds. The Seawolves got 16 points off the bench from senior guard Buddy Bailey (5-6 FG, 4-5 3FG, 2-2 FT), while junior forward McCade Olsen scored 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting.
After falling behind 17-6 in the opening minutes, the Division II Seawolves put a 23-3 run on the Division I Pride and took a 37-36 lead into the halftime break.
UAA increased its advantage to 44-38 on an Arts layup four minutes into the second half, but Hofstra ? which reached the NIT quarterfinals in March ? grabbed the lead back at 50-49 a few minutes later, 50-49, on a Stokes layup.
Stokes, the Pride's national player-of-the-year candidate, finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists to earn Carrs/Safeway Player of the Game honors. Sestokas scored 18 points, and Agudio had 19 points and four assists.
UAA fell to 28-59 all-time in the Shootout, finishing in sixth place this year.
The Seawolves will have a week off before returning to D-II competition against Florida Tech at the Glacier Classic, Dec. 8 in Fairbanks.
