Seawolf treys foil Vulcan upset bid

ANCHORAGE – Eric Draper scored 24 points to lead five Seawolves in double figures as the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team earned a tough 85-72 victory over Hawaii-Hilo on Friday in the final game of the AT&T Alascom Jamboree.

The Seawolves (9-2) also got 12 points and eight assists from point guard Luke Cooper and 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists from Jamboree Most Outstanding Player Carl Arts. The Vulcans (3-9) stayed in the game until the late going thanks to 18 points from guard Travis Sobers and 11 points and 10 rebounds from forward Samuel Wilhoite.

UAA scored the game's first seven points and the last seven points of the first half to take a 41-29 at the break.

The Vulcans, of the Pacific West Conference, would charge back with a 7-0 run of their own to start the second half and managed to cut their deficit to 52-48 on two Rashad Bilal free throws with 13:02 to play.

But the Seawolves got hot at that point, getting three-pointers from four different players – Arts, Cooper, Draper and McCade Olsen (13 pts, 3-3 FG, 6-6 FT) – on four consecutive possessions to take a permanent double-digit advantage.

Senior guard Buddy Bailey scored 12 points (4-7 3FG) and dished a career-best seven assists, and starting post Ivan Platenik chipped in with seven points and four assists.

Friday's game was the final non-conference affair for the Seawolves this season, with both losses coming against Division I teams in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. UAA is now 6-0 against D-II competition, including 2-0 against the West Region.

The Seawolves begin Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Thursday with a home date against defending league champ Seattle Pacific (7 p.m. AST).

UAA's victory also meant a 4-game sweep for the GNAC over the Pac West in the Jamboree after Alaska Fairbanks upset nationally 19th-ranked BYU-Hawaii 76-71 in Friday's early game.

Senior Jushay Rockett had a career-high 33 points (12-18 FG, 9-12 FT) and nine rebounds and fellow All-Jamboree pick Kenny Barker contributed 19 points and four assists for the Nanooks (9-5).

BYUH (8-4) – which has suffered all of its losses against GNAC schools – was led by freshman Lucas Alves' 24 points.
