ARCATA, Calif. (Feb. 18) - Faced with a must-win situation in its final road game of the season, the UAA men's basketball team came through with a 93-78 victory over Humboldt State at a sold-out East Gymnasium on Saturday.
The Seawolves (17-10, 8-7 GNAC) kept their playoff hopes alive behind 26 points from guard Kemmy Burgess and 17 points from fellow senior Adam Fitt-Chappell. Forward Grayson Moyer led HSU (14-8, 8-6) with 22 points, but it wasn't enough to prevent UAA from earning its first-ever win in Arcata.
UAA, ranked No. 6 in the West Region, fell behind 10-2 in the first three minutes before gaining its composure. After a 9-0 run gained the Seawolves their first lead, Burgess helped forge a 41-39 halftime advantage with 18 points in the opening stanza.
Brian Hills (10 points, 5-7 FG, 6 rebounds) started the scoring in the second half, and the Seawolves slowly stretched their lead until Carl Arts (11 pts, 4-5 FG) nailed his only three-point try at the 13:42 mark, making it 61-51.
A Moyer free throw brought the regionally 7th-ranked Lumberjacks within 66-60, but Joe Davis and James Hartman hit back-to-back layups to spark a 9-0 Seawolf run at that point. UAA led by at least nine points the rest of the way as they finished with a 2-7 road mark overall and in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
Davis finished with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting to put five Seawolves in double-figure scoring. Sophomore point guard Luke Cooper scored nine points (1-1 FG, 7-10 FT) and dished six assists. Hartman led the Seawolves with eight rebounds, and Hills had a pair of blocked shots.
The Seawolves close the season with three games at home, beginning next Saturday, Feb. 25 against arch-rival and regionally ranked Alaska Fairbanks (7 p.m.).
