SEATTLE (Feb. 4) - The UAA men's basketball team wasted a fast start and an incredible offensive performance by senior guard
Kemmy Burgess as it lost 82-72 to Seattle University at the Connolly Center on Saturday night.
Burgess scored a career-high 36 points for the Seawolves (14-9, 5-6 GNAC), who fell to 1-6 on the road. Senior forward Jeffrey McDaniel powered the Redhawks (12-8, 5-6) with 22 points.
The Seawolves looked unstoppable early as Burgess connected on his first six shots - including four three-pointers - to take a 21-9 lead just six minutes in. But the Redhawks would answer with a 10-0 run and tied it at 26-26 on McDaniel's layup with 6:10 showing in the first half.
UAA, which got 23 points from Burgess in the opening 20 minutes, managed to take a 34-32 lead into the locker room, but the home team quickly took control in the second half.
Two free throws by forward Leigh Swanson (8 points, game-high 10 rebounds) gave Seattle its first lead of the night with 16:44 to play, and UAA never managed to retake the advantage. The Seawolves kept the deficit as low as 51-50 at the 7:30 mark before the Redhawks slowly pulled away.
Burgess' point total was the most for a Seawolf in a regulation game since Peter Bullock scored 37 against Wyoming in the 2002 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. UAA's all-time three-point percentage leader made 8 of 13 treys on the night, coming one short of the school record held by Mark Drake and Ron Fischer.
Aside from Burgess and fellow shooting guard Eric Draper (13 points, 4-7 FG, 3-6 3FG), however, the rest of the Seawolves fell flat, combining to shoot just 4 of 17 from the field.
Sophomore point guard Luke Cooper had seven assists, but he fouled out along with sophomore power forward Joe Davis. Senior swingman James Hartman scored eight points (1-5 FG, 5-7 FT) and paced UAA with eight rebounds.
SU dominated the rebounding battle, 41-26.
The Seawolves close the season with five of their last seven games at home, beginning with Thursday's 7:30 p.m. tilt with Northwest Nazarene at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
