ANCHORAGE ? Led by the hot shooting of freshman guard John Roberson, Texas Tech scored an easy 74-47 win over host Alaska Anchorage on Thursday in the first round of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout at Sullivan Arena.
The Red Raiders (3-1) got 22 points from Roberson and 16 from fellow rookie Mike Singletary as they jumped to a 28-8 lead midway through the first half and were never challenged by the Division II Seawolves.
UAA (2-1) was led by nine points from senior forward Carl Arts, who grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds in the losing effort. The Seawolves suffered their worst defeat since a 90-55 loss to Alabama in the 2004 Shootout and scored their fewest points since a 62-42 loss at Kentucky in December 1999.
Texas Tech, meanwhile, hit 10 of its first 12 shots and finished the game shooting 58.6 percent from the field. Roberson led the way with 8-of-9 marksmanship, including 6 of 7 from three-point range, adding five assists. Singletary did his damage closer to the basket on 6-of-9 shooting, grabbing six rebounds, while guard Alan Voskuil led the visitors with seven rebounds.
The Red Raiders advance to Friday's late semifinal (8 p.m. AST, ESPN360) against the winner of No. 14 Gonzaga and Western Kentucky. UAA drops into Friday's consolation bracket against the loser of that game at 2 p.m.
