ANCHORAGE – Joe Davis and McCade Olsen combined for 38 points off the bench, but visiting Western Oregon ended the game with a 12-3 run to upset Alaska Anchorage 81-73 in men's basketball action Thursday at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
UAA (13-6, 4-4 GNAC), ranked No. 6 in the West Region, also got 14 points from senior Eric Draper. WOU (7-12, 2-6) was led by the hot shooting of forward Travis Kuhns and guard Alex Swerzbin, who scored 22 points apiece.
The Seawolves took a 70-69 lead with 1:53 remaining when Luke Cooper (6 pts, 13 assists) kissed a running one-hander off the glass and prompting a timeout by the Wolves.
WOU set up guard Larry Hall for an open three-pointer, which he swished, then got a stop on the other end when Davis (18 pts) missed a layup. The Wolves sealed the shocking result on their next trip as guard Dominique DeWeese hit another trey for his first bucket of the night, making it 75-70. WOU would score the next six points from the free throw line before Draper made a three-pointer in the final ticks.
Olsen finished with 20 points, while Davis had 18.
The Wolves entered the game 1-8 on the road this season and last of nine teams in the GNAC standings. UAA beat WOU 70-49 just two weeks ago in Monmouth, Ore.
The Seawolves led 35-24 with four minutes left in the first half, but the Wolves used a 6-2 spurt to close within 37-30 and kept their comeback going in the second half.
UAA gets a shot at redemption Saturday when it hosts league-leading Saint Martin's at 7 p.m. at the WFSC.
