Seawolves bump Saints from GNAC perch

ANCHORAGE – The Australian duo of Ivan Platenik and Luke Cooper combined for 44 points Saturday to lead Alaska Anchorage to a 93-76 victory over Saint Martin's at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, knocking the Saints from first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's men's basketball race.

The Seawolves (14-6, 5-4 GNAC) also got 18 points from guard Eric Draper as they shot 50 percent from the floor and 46 percent from three-point range.

The Saints (9-11, 6-3) got a game-high 26 points from forward Brendan Campbell and 21 points from point guard Jake Linton as they dropped to second place for the first time since league play began Jan. 4.

Platenik, a 6-7 forward, poured in 23 points (8-13 FG, 7-8 FT), while Cooper had 21 points (7-13 FG, 5-9 3FG) and a game-best eight assists. The point totals were career-highs for both Melbourne, Australia, natives, while Platenik also came up with five rebounds, four assists and a personal-best three blocks.

McCade Olsen scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Seawolves, and was joined in double-figures by fellow junior forward Carl Arts (11 pts, 6 rebounds).

UAA, coming off a tough loss Thursday against Western Oregon, appeared in trouble again Saturday as the Saints jumped to a 20-12 lead in the first 10 minutes. However, the Seawolves fought back to take the lead at the 3:22 mark, and Draper scored seven points in the last two minutes of the stanza to secure a 42-33 halftime advantage.

The Saints, of Lacey, Wash., scored two free throws to start the second half, but Draper answered with one of his four three-pointers and the Seawolves slowly pulled away. SMU clawed within 66-58 with 9:22 left before Platenik scored four consecutive points to stretch to a permanent double-digit lead.

The Seawolves improved to 13-0 this season when shooting 50 percent or better from the field and 9-0 when scoring 80 or more points.

UAA completes its three-game homestand Wednesday, Feb. 7, when arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks visits the WFSC at 7 p.m.
