Speedy Seawolf squads are NCAA-bound

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The Alaska Anchorage men's and women's cross country teams are headed to NCAA Division II Nationals after racing to second- and third-place finishes, respectively, at the West Regionals at UC San Diego on Saturday morning.

The nationally 6th-ranked Seawolf men finished with 67 points behind 4th-ranked Chico State's 28 points. UAA's women ? ranked No. 13 ? totaled 104 points behind No. 3 Chico State and No. 12 Seattle Pacific. This marks the second time that UAA has sent both the men's and women's squads to Nationals in the same season.

Leading the pack for the men was sophomore Marko Cheseto, who crossed the line in 32 minutes, 24.6 seconds, for a runner-up finish in the 10K race. Cheseto was just 9 seconds shy of the title that went to Chico State's Scott Bauhs.

Freshmen Jake Parisien (5th, 32:54.2) and Alfred Kangogo (9th, 33:26.0) placed in the top 10, while senior All-American David Kiplagat was 13th with a time of 33:35.3. All four runners earned All-West Region honors by virtue of their top-15 finishes.

Rounding out the men's scoring was Paul Rottich (40th, 35:19.9), while senior Auston Ellis (54th, 36:06.6) and sophomore Cory Pena (94th, 39:06.3) rounded out the Seawolf contingent.

On the women's side, junior Laura Carr and senior Elizabeth Chepkosgei each gained all-region accolades as Carr finished the 6K race in a time of 21: 40.3 for fourth place, and Chepkosgei came in sixth with a time of 21:58.

Freshman Ruth Jeptoo was clocked at 23:03.7 for an 18th-place finish, while sophomores Emma Bohman (36th, 23:48.7) and Hallidie Wilt (40th, 23:51.7) rounded out the scorers for UAA.

The final two runners for UAA were Laura Romach at 52nd with a time of 24:10.1 and Shoshana Keegan placing 64th in 24:44.4.

The men's team qualified for Nationals by finishing among the top three teams, while the women needed to make the top five. The men's second-place team result marks the tenth consecutive season the program has finished in the top five at West Regionals.

The men's run, which began at 8:45 a.m. PST, was stopped after the runners made a wrong turn navigating the course. The 10K was then rerun at 11 o'clock, after the women's race.

Both teams will head to the 2008 NCAA Division II Nationals that will be held at Slippery Rock, Pa., on Nov. 22.
