SEATTLE ? Senior Carl Arts scored 20 points but the nationally 9th-ranked Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team could not survive cold second-half shooting as host Seattle Pacific roared back to upset the Seawolves 65-58 at Royal Brougham Pavilion on Saturday night.
The West Region No. 1-ranked Seawolves (23-5, 14-2 GNAC) also got 13 points from senior center McCade Olsen as they missed an opportunity to clinch a tie for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title as well as a school-record-tying 24th win.
The Falcons (19-6, 11-5), ranked No. 3 in the West, got 20 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks from senior center Rob Will, who connected on 8 of 9 shots. Fellow seniors Marques Echols (20 points, 6-9 FG, 4 assists), JoJay Jackson (14 points, 9 rebounds) and Jared Moultrie (5 points, 4 assists, 3 steals) all made big contributions in their final career home games.
UAA looked sharp in the first half as Arts scored 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting to take a 35-31 halftime lead.
But that advantage evaporated quickly in the second half as SPU tied it 40-40 just three minutes in, then took the lead for good, 44-42, when Will canned a layup at the 15:40 mark.
The Falcons extended their lead as high as nine points before UAA rallied within 59-56 on a three-pointer by senior guard Chris Bryant (6 points) with 1:34 remaining. Jackson answered with an SPU trey on the next possession, however, sending the Seawolves toward just their second loss to an NCAA Div. II team this season.
UAA had its poorest offensive outing of the season in the second half, making just 7 of 27 shots (25.9 percent) from the field.
With Central Washington's victory at Seattle University, the Seawolves now lead the Wildcats but one game heading into the final week of GNAC play. Both teams are at home, with UAA facing Saint Martin's and Western Oregon, and CWU going against Northwest Nazarene and SPU.
The UAA games begin at 7 p.m. both nights, Thursday against SMU and Saturday against WOU.
