ANCHORAGE ? Carl Arts scored 23 points and fellow senior Chris Bryant tossed in 21 points Saturday as the 11th-ranked Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team claimed the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title outright with a 90-60 thumping of Western Oregon.
A Wells Fargo Sports Complex sellout crowd watched as UAA (25-5, 16-2 GNAC) roared back from an early 18-11 deficit to take a 51-36 halftime lead and cruise to the victory.
McCade Olsen scored 13 of his 14 points in the first half and grabbed eight rebounds, while Luke Cooper had 12 points and nine assists. Even 5th-year walk-on Jared Kettler got into the act, scoring two points and swatting a career-high two shots in 15 minutes as he drew his first career start.
Senior guard Brad Krichevsky was the only player in double figures for WOU (15-12, 8-10) with 18 points.
UAA outshot the visitors from Monmouth, Ore., 55 percent (33-60) to 38.5 percent, and outrebounded them 43-22. All 10 Seawolves found the scoring column, including seven points on 3-of-3 shooting from junior center Jeremiah Trueman. Junior guard Doug Hardy also had a nice night with a career-high five rebounds, three assists and no turnovers in 10 minutes, and freshman guard Lonnie Ridgeway totaled four points and four rebounds.
The Seawolves solidified their No. 1 ranking in the NCAA Div. II West Region as they earned their school-record 25th victory and established the best league mark in the 7-year history of the GNAC. Four teams had previously gone 15-3 in the 10-team conference.
UAA will find out its postseason plans Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ADT when the NCAA announces the eight 8-team regional fields for the Div. II Tournament. The Seawolves will be the likely No. 1 seed and could host the West Regional on Mar. 14, 15 and 17 at the WFSC.
